"Hand Hygiene Referent"

HygiMed offers a hand hygiene training course intended for healthcare professionals. This course is taught jointly by two experts in hand hygiene. It consists of a full-day group session, followed by an individual theoretical examination and a practical validation session.

At the end of the course, the successful candidate receives a certificate "Hand Hygiene Referent" to acknowledge that he/she has acquired the following skills:

  • capacity to lead the hand hygiene training programme for healthcare workers in his/her institution,
  • conduct surveys of hand hygiene compliance by the direct monitoring of healthcare workers, based on the recommended WHO "My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene" methodology.

Personal investment - approximately 18 hours, including:

  • reading of the WHO Hand Hygiene Technical Reference Manual (~2 hours)
  • theoretical and practical training course (8 hours)
  • personal preparation for the examination (~4 hours)
  • on-site theoretical examination and practical validation session (~4 hours)

"Hand Hygiene Referent"

Prerequisites

Access to the Hand Hygiene Referent training course requires one of the following degrees, or a degree deemed equivalent:

  • Auxiliary
  • Nursing assistant
  • Registered nurse
  • Physician
  • Midwife
To be admitted to training, people must practice with a minimum occupancy rate of 50% in their field of activity and have a prior experience in healthcare of minimum three years.

Notice: it is essential to have gone through the WHO Hand Hygiene Technical Reference Manual prior to the course.

  • 1st part - Trainer skills:
    • Epidemiological background
    • Dynamics of hand contamination and germ transmission during care
    • Hand Hygiene: How and When?
    • WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy, implementation toolkit
  • 2nd part - Observer skills:
    • Direct monitoring of hand hygiene adherence according to the WHO "My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene" methodology
    • Role plays and videos

At the end of the course, each participant should schedule his/her examination and validation date with the trainer.

Examination and validation

Duration : 1/2 day

A written examination and a validation session of direct observation of hand hygiene practices (minimum 2 periods of 20 minutes each) must be scheduled in the participant's institution in order to verify that the defined skills were acquired. Each participant should schedule his/her examination and validation date with the trainer at the end of the training course.
